One of the main components of PBIS is the use of a research validated curricula to support social and emotional functioning as well as teaching positive behavior in the classroom and school. PBIS is a framework to promote positive behavior. WhyTry is a tool that is used within that framework to teach students what positive behavior looks like and how to exhibit this behavior in the school. For example, the school where I am currently working is a PBIS school. Our students are reminded by all adults, posters around the school, and classroom rules to S.O.A.R. This stands for Safety, Organization, Achievement, and Respect. We tell all the students to SOAR and teach them how to do these behaviors through the WhyTry program. WhyTry is used as our Tier One and Tier Two intervention. We teach the concepts from WhyTry in the classrooms and during our monthly SOAR assemblies. For the classroom intervention, either the social worker or myself teams with the classroom teacher to teach a lesson from WhyTry once a week for approx. 45 min to one hour. In the SOAR assemblies, we acknowledge those students that have been nominated by their teacher as students who have SOARed that month. We start out the assembly with a brief overview of a WhyTry lesson and then give the awards. We will say something like this student was caught SOARing because they stayed out of the loop and were able to tear off negative labels. We also use WhyTry as a Tier Two and Three intervention for those students who need a little bit of help outside of the classroom. Lessons are covered more in depth in small group (tier two) or one-on-one setting (tier three).
